As the weather starts to turn into Autumn and then winter, your coats become the majority of what people actually see you in. Having a few options that you can just pick up and throw on, and feel good in as you dash out the door, is one way to make your mornings that little less stressful. Mum’s doing the school/ nursery drop off know that when the weather turns cold and wet, having the perfect coat to see you to the school gates without you turning into a drowned rat is essential.
These coats aren’t just for the school run, these are the perfect coats for, and amongst other things, spending time on the freezing cold side lines this winter to watch our children play sport or perhaps hours spent in a freezing cold park or playground. We all deserve some thing that is practical and as warm as our duvets, but also stylish.
My ideal school run coat would be –
- Waterproof
- With a hood
- Warm
- Goes with Everything
I’ve included a mixture of in terms of warmth, it’s always good to have a duvet style coat to see you through those really cold winter days as well as the wet ones this side of Christmas.
I’ve grouped them together in categories – Parka’s , Puffer’s, Padded and Petites, of course there are more styles out there but these are my go to for ticking all the boxes of practicallty and style together.
I’ve only included items that have stock online at the time.

More Padded than Puffer

Last year I tried on lots of puffer style coats and I couldn’t find one that I liked. Being short I just felt they swamped me. So I started to look at more padded styles that gave the elements I liked but without the bulk. This one from Amazon I saw on @thefashionablepan and gave it a try. It was much shorter on her so I knew it would be longer on me and give me more coverage, which I wanted.

Petites
The key thing for petites is that you don’t want to look like you have been swallowed by your coat and I find so many coats around are over sized in style, which doesn’t work unless you have the height to pull it off.
Tips –
- Look for petite versions of the styles you like or from brands that do petite as an option ( eg Boden who I have featured below)
- A gathered / draw string or belted waist can really help the overall look not being too much coat for your frame.
- Over sized shapes will tend to swap you stick to fitted or Straight.
- Think about length, if you are wanting a longer coat that goes to your knees for example look for styles that on the models come up my higher on the leg. Anything already very long will of course be too long for a petite.
These are also available in regular fit
The picture of this Boden coat doesn’t do this justice, it’s so soft inside and the lining is actually removable so you can wear now as a lighter rain coat and add in the warm inner later on. It even has the soft sheep like inner layer inside the pockets which feels very luxurious.
Which is your favourite?
