The things you need in your wardrobe no matter what the fashion trends are, the buys that last season after season, year after year.
I will be doing more detailed edits on these categories in the weeks to come, in the meantime I think whilst we are just starting off into the new season, it’s good to think about what transitional pieces will be your go to’s over the next few months.
Transitional dressing is taking your current clothes then adding layers to bring them into the next season and also making them more practical and wearable, all of the below items do that for your current summer clothes and are not trends they are wardrobe essentials.
The outfit formula is simple really-
Summer outfit + one or more of the below = autumn outfit
In my previous blog I talked about the benefit of going through your clothes and seeing what you had, what needs to go away till next summer and what you can carry into Autumn. This blog is about how to transition your outfits to Autumn and my top 3 high street finds to help you along the way. Just click on item to shop.

Ankle Boots

Wearing boots with your dresses, skirts jumpsuits perfectly transitions your summer outfits into Autumn, throw on a layer too and you are ready to go.
Chunky boots are big again this season but they are not for everyone. Try on a few styles to see what suits you and how you feel about the trend. The chunkier styles do go so well with the summer dresses and midi skirts because they really balance out the feminine dress and give the outfit a bit of an edge.
I’ll be covering boots in future detail in a few weeks as there is just so much to talk about! For now here are a few variations of the chunky style boot to dip your toe in.
Jeans

Jeans are the backbone of my wardrobe, soon as it’s a bit cooler, I’m back in them. Wear them just with a tee/ blouse / shirt and layer up. For this time of year I start turning to the darker washes, indigo, black and grey.
It’s hard to find the perfect jeans for you, there is no way around it, it’s all about the ground work.
I’m only recommending these M&S jeans, I really rate their jeans and as such a hero item in your wardrobe you need to shop around to find the perfect ones for you, so when you find a good pair buy in multiple colours.
I’m on my second pair of these Harper cigarette jeans from M&S, soft to wear and great indigo wash. Wearing a Straight leg is stylish and easy to wear and also much more universally flattering.
Knitwear

Wearing a knit over a dress or with a skirt is another great way to layer and warm up your outfit. A cardigan is also a great autumn essential and perfect over dresses or with jeans and a tee.
Opting for a plain crew neck in a neutral colour will give you the most options to mix and match with your existing wardrobe. If you are wanting a pop of colour my tip would be to go with a lovely Autumnal orange or this seasons colour, green.
I have this wrap cardigan from & other stories from last year and it’s such a great classic piece, perfect over dresses or with high waisted jeans. Comes in a few colours they will sell out fast tho.
Trench

The go to autumn coat , a item that never goes out of style. Buy classic for longevity or go for a colour . This year there are lots of trenches with added details , but I’ll come back to that in a different blog. Practical for those wet days and easy to throw over .. well everything.
Shacket

My go to item for layering and perfect for in between weather days .. being in the UK that’s most of the time. Wear over everything. Opting for a plain one in a neutral colour with mean it goes with more of your wardrobe but equally a check one will lift and add interests to your jeans and Tee combo.
They are your transitional season hero item and will be back out again every autumn and spring.
I hope I have given you some Autumn outfit inspiration.
